At Velocipede’s cooperative bicycle shop, people can
volunteer their time and expertise to help prepare donated bikes for resale at moderate cost. Previous experience with bicycles is useful but not at all necessary. Come on in, and we'll help you get started.
buy ready-to-ride, moderately priced, second-hand bikes
claim and fix-up a bike that has been donated or use tools to work on their own bikes by trading volunteer hours for shop credit toward a bike, parts or shop time
donate bicycles or bike parts they aren't using (any condition!) so that someone else can.
Wednesday: 6pm - 10pm
Thursday: 6pm - 10pm
Sunday: 2pm - 6pm (only for building up shop bikes worth <$40, no repairs)
Volunteer staff will be on-hand during shop hours to provide technical assistance. Volunteer hours, donations or trades are required in exchange for bikes, tool use and services provided.
Velocipede depends on the work of volunteers to teach bicycle maintenance, build bikes for sale and organize the shop. In return, volunteer time is given monetary value, redeemable for parts. People of all mechanical skill level are encouraged to participate!
Velocipede also conducts educational outreach programs for children and teenagers in various Baltimore communities. If you would be interested in participating as a volunteer, please contact us.
A monthly fee of $33 or 3 hours of volunteer time entitles a member to unlimited use of tools and services. Any extra volunteer hours can be put towards parts. Once co-op membership is reached a member may pick out a frame to fix up for him/herself. Extra hours or trade may be required in order to leave with the bike depending on the quality of the bike selected. This will be determined by a collective member at the time the bike is chosen.
If you do not want to commit to becoming a co-op member, you still are welcome to come by during open shop hours to use our tools and services. However, we do ask for a 5-15 dollar donation in return for “drop in” tool use. No one will be turned away for lack of funds, but remember that we do need to keep the lights on!!
Velocipede offers instruction in basic bicycle maintenance and more advanced repair and construction. These are intended primarily for our volunteers, but all are welcome. We also offer lectures and classes open to the public. Check out the calendar.
Donations of bicycles and parts in any condition are always needed and accepted at Velocipede. If you have a bike you aren't using, or one that doesn't work, donate it to velocipede, and we'll fix it up and get it on the street. Donations are tax deductible. Bring what you have by the shop during the hours listed above, or contact us as described below to arrange an alternate time. Velocipede does not purchase used bicycle equipment but sometimes hardware can be traded.
Monetary donations to Velocipede are tax deductible and provide for vital operating needs like new small parts, tools, utilities and educational and administrative supplies.
Velocipede is collectively led by members dedicated to Velocipede’s long-term future. Collective meetings are one Monday night per month and are open to the public. Check out our calendar for the dates of our admin meetings or contact us at info @ velocipedebikeproject . org to learn more about collective membership.
